As General Manager of Kate McLean Homecare, Aimee has witnessed firsthand how the homecare industry is evolving to meet the changing needs of New Zealanders. Emerging technologies, policy shifts, and innovative strategies are redefining how we deliver care—and in-home care is playing an increasingly vital role.
One key driver? The growing pressure on rest homes due to bed shortages. A recent report revealed that demand for aged care beds is projected to outstrip supply by over 4,000 beds by 2030. With our aging population, this shortfall underscores the urgency of finding sustainable solutions. This is where in-home care shines. Studies show that aging in place, with the right support, leads to better physical and mental health outcomes. Clients can maintain their independence, stay connected to their communities, and receive personalised care tailored to their unique needs—all while alleviating pressure on residential facilities.
Technology is also transforming how we deliver care. Tools such as telehealth and remote monitoring enable safer and more efficient care delivery in some instances. However, while technology is increasingly important, it cannot replace the value of one-to-one human connection. Building trust, showing empathy, and providing personalised support remain the cornerstone of quality care—and these can only be achieved through meaningful, in-person interactions.
Policy advancements are helping, too. Government programs that support in-home care, such as subsidies and respite care initiatives, empower more families to embrace this option. Aimee would like to see the homecare subsidy for respite care be equal to that of what residential respite care receives. With the known shortage of beds, surely it’s better to keep people at home, in familiar surroundings, as not everyone finds moving into a rest home for respite care the best outcome. It seems defeatist to have organisations delivering the same level of care at home as someone would receive in a rest home, but not receive the same subsidy amount.
At Kate McLean Homecare, we’re proud to be part of this dynamic landscape. We’re leveraging these trends to provide exceptional, client-centered care while championing the benefits of aging at home.
